Corner of Hope St. and Cowcaddens, the McConnell building.

March 1974
McPhater St. Cowcaddens United Free Church (Campbell Douglas and Sellars, 1872) was under severe threat at this time, but it survived to become the Piping Centre, with its adjacent manse the Piper’s Hotel. The palazzo-like building beyond (Orient House, by W J Anderson, who also built Napier House in Govan) survives too, now flats. In fact, in a reversal of the normal order, only the tower block has gone. *
