The picturesque pre-industrial village of Govan viewed from the east or from Partick was a favoured subject for 18th and 19th century landscape artists (SCRAN has many examples), and the focal point of the view is generally a church with a neat tower and spire - Govan Old Parish Church, latterly the 1828 building, which was modelled on the Shakespeare church in Stratford-upon-Avon. This focal point was lost in 1884 when the church was deemed too small for the expanding congregation and was replaced by the present towerless building (a tower was planned but the money ran out). However, with commendable enterprise the old church was dismantled stone by stone, carted a few hundred yards, and re-erected in Golspie St as Elderpark Parish Church.
